How to Identify Market Trend Clearly (Beginner’s Guide)

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is using indicators without knowing the trend.

What Is a Market Trend?

A trend shows the general direction of price movement.

There are only three types:

  1. Uptrend – higher highs, higher lows
  2. Downtrend – lower highs, lower lows
  3. Sideways – no clear direction

Step 1: Identify Trend Using Price (Most Important)

Indicators come later. Price comes first.

Uptrend:

  • Price makes higher highs
  • Price makes higher lows

Downtrend:

  • Price makes lower highs
  • Price makes lower lows

If price structure is unclear → trend is sideways.

 

Step 2: Use Moving Averages (Simple Method)

Use:

Trend Rules:

  • Price above both → Uptrend
  • Price below both → Downtrend
  • Price crossing repeatedly → Sideways

Step 3: Confirm Trend with RSI

  • Uptrend: RSI usually stays above 40
  • Downtrend: RSI usually stays below 60

📌 RSI < 30 in uptrend = opportunity
📌 RSI > 70 in downtrend = warning

Step 4: Confirm with MFI

  • Rising MFI → Strength
  • Falling MFI → Weakness

If price rising + MFI falling → trend weakening.

Step 5: Use Delivery Percentage (For Confidence)

  • Uptrend + high delivery % → strong trend
  • Uptrend + low delivery % → trader-driven move

Delivery confirms quality of trend.

Why Trend Matters More Than Indicators

  • Indicators work with trend
  • Indicators fail against trend

Most losses happen because:

People buy oversold stocks in downtrends.
